I’m not actually sure that these female figures represent Nuns, or if they are female Bodhisattva, but I liked the alignment of statues casting shadows, and the leaning broom breaks that alignment nicely.

Despite our inability to travel over the christmas holiday (same as everybody else) we tried to make the most of it and check out HK spots that we’d missed so far. Such was the 10000 Buddhas temple in Sha Tin. A long strip of concrete path lined with lifesize buddhist statues leads to the temple itself up the hill. Fascinating place and great opportunity to shoot portraits of monks, abbots and stranger things.

Yes, we still have ice cream vans in Hong Kong. There’s not a lot of choice, mind you, it’s Italian style vanilla ice cream or… Italian style vanilla ice cream. But my daughter loves it, and she’s not the only one in any age group, it seems.

One of the real challenges of shooting street is this ability to take shots « en passant » as we would say in French, and that’s made even harder when you’re fully manual and your camera is as large as a large brick. So even though there’s nothing spectacular about this shot, just the fact that it’s in focus and framed properly makes me happy!
*Catholic Cemetery*

On the tiny Island of Yim Tin Tsai, there’s an abandoned Hakka village that was evangelised in the XIXth century. The island was abandoned in the middle of the XXth century but can still be visited. In addition to the derelict houses, there’s a chapel (still in use) and a catholic cemetery. I liked the hillside cemetery a lot, with its mix of Chinese and Catholic iconography.
*Graffiti Jumble*

The backalleys of Central are a treasure trove for graffiti lovers, which is not what you’d necesseraly expect of this otherwise affluent neighbourhood. I regularly roam the area, and quite often find that black and white is just as interesting as colour despite the polychromatism of the original.

This was only the second time I shot Kodak E100, a mythical and long discontinued slide film that Kodak brought back to market a couple of years ago. I have to say that on the whole it’s not for me. Very very limited exposure latitude and brutally unforgiving. I’m sure some can do great things with it, but I can’t. Of a whole roll I shot from the Wan Chai Ferry observation deck before and during sunset, this is the only shot I like. But I do like it, and it highlights a side of Hong Kong that few outside the city know about!

Recent walks up Braemar Hill have revealed to me some amazing views of Hong Kong. This shot was taken in medium format on a slightly hazy day with slide, which explains both the vivid colors and the limited dynamic range, but I quite like it nonetheless.
*Waterfall Abstraction*

When I headed out to the Silvermine Waterfall I had my GW690iii loaded with Acros film and a tripod. I normally aim for exposure times higher than 1/30s and lower than 1s for moving water as I find that anything more tends to make the water look too supernatural for lack of a better word. Metering of the local scene however limited me to 1/30s here, and probably 1/15s or 1/10s would have been better to direct the waterflow. Still, I like the results, verging on the abstract.

A few weeks ago I posted a shot of this statue store with the owner standing proudly in front. The previous shot in the roll was of the same location with these two policemen walking down the street in front of the store. I quite like it as well.
