The first time I went to see Trombone Shorty live, the place was so packed I couldn’t get close to the stage like I normally do. So I got some shots from the crowd instead…
Sylvain Bardiau is the trumpet player from the Grande Campagnie des Musiques à Ouïr, an inventive and exciting French jazz collective. I often try to use the lensbaby during concerts for a different feel. Doesn’t always work, here I think it did. This photo was part of the three submissions at the Nancy Jazz Festival Concert Photography Contest 2011 that won second place.
Pianists are perhaps the hardest musicians to shoot: you want to have the face, the hands and the keyboard in the frame, and that’s damn hard. This shot of French jazz pianist Laurent deWilde was probably my first successful pianist shot.
Umphrey’s McGee’s Brendan Bayliss backlit. Probably one of the most original concert shots I’ve done.
Nigel Hall is a wonderful soul singer and keyboard player who played with Soulive and Lettuce. This was shot at a Lettuce concert in NYC’s Brooklyn Bowl.
Joop van der Linden plays the trombone for the Amsterdam Klezmer Band.
Gijs Levelt is the wonderful trumpet player from the Amsterdam Klezmer Band.
Avishai Cohen is a very photo friednly musician. I used the Lensbaby here to focus on his face without losing the dynamic look of the instrument.
Sometimes accidental shots can result in interesting things. This shot of Derek Trucks in motion wasn’t planned but I love how it came out. I’m now trying to reproduce that look deliberately, and it’s not easy!
