Inside the Crypt

It’s not easy to capture the inside of a crypt, especially on a sunny day. You have to find one with the proper orientation to the sun so that the outside isn’t blown and the inside isn’t black. I quite like this shot for that reason.

The statuary in cemeteries is rarely joyful, but often offers great opportunities for compositions. This is what I tried to do here, framing the statue of the weeping widow in context.

What I really liked in the Père Lachaise cemetery compared to others I have visited is that parts of it are not nicely laid out and manucured. There are wild areas, where the tombs seem to jut from the ground, the vines have invaded the stones, etc. It feels much more like what I expect a cemetery to feel like, a place forgotten by the living.

On the hills of Edinburgh sits the Old Calton Burial Ground, a wonderfully moody cemetery where I spent a good hour just wandering around and taking photos. Some of the mausoleums are massive, such as this one.

Despite living over 10 years near or in Paris I had never walked around the Père Lachaise Cemetary. I strongly recommend it, it’s quite spectacular, in a low-key an occasionally macabre way.
Peeping Out the Nightclub

When you shoot street there are sometimes things you discover after the shot that strike you as more significant than what you wanted to shoot in the first place. Such is the case here, I only noticed the guy peering out the top window when processing the shot.

People here love their street food. You can see people eating snacks at all times of the day (and night). This guy though, with the artificial blonde hair and the Sasa backdrop really stood out.

This is another shot from Sham Shui Po. I really love the light here, all artificial, coming from the little store, at something like 5 AM. To be fair I’m not often up at that time, but I should try and make the effort more often…
Sham Shui Po Highway

About two years ago I came over to Hong Kong (when I was still living in Shanghai) and stayed in a really high up hotel room in Sham Shui Po. The view by day was nothing to write home about, but at night I immediately saw the potential. I did two long exposure shots to capture the light trails, one vertical (Slow Hong Kong) and this one. I really like the contrast between the cold tones of the building lines and the warm tones of the highway.
Quiet Night in CWB

Iconic night shots of Hong Kong feature these massive and colourful stree signs. In my first weeks here I did a few night outings hunting down these signs. Not easy to find balanced compositions, but I think this one works, the mini-bus balancing the sign.
