Erik Della Penna is the lead guitarist in the latest line-up of Hazmat Modine (@hazmatmodine), and while (obviously) his guitar and banjo stylings were awesome when I saw them live last year, the other thing that struck me about him were his clear blue eyes. The kind of stare that pierces the soul, as the poets would say. I hopefully captured that, at least as much as you can from a half-length portrait.

Cory Seznec is a wonderful guitarist whose band is full of wonderful talents. But there is something about double bass players that makes for great compositions, I find. I really like the intensity in Thomas Garoche’s expression here. Incidentally, this was my first gig shot with the 50-140 f/2.8 OIS lens, and my first gig ever shot with stabilization. It’s wonderful! I haven’t pushed it to extremes yet (I was still shooting at a speed faster than the focal length) but I will try pushing it in the future.

Vintage trouble in general has a nostalgia feel not only in their music but also in their looks. But while that might be true of the band in general, it’s striking about singer Ty Taylor, a living blend of James Brown and Junior Wells with the energy to live to that legacy. I shot this ages ago, but it went bizarrely unpublished until now.

Nalle Colt is the guitarist of Vintage Trouble, a blues/soul revival band that packs a ton of energy. In my early days of shooting concerts I would use a lot of dutch angles, then I stopped doing it. But once in a while, it works quite nicely.

While I was preparing my business trip to San Francisco a few weeks back I found out that Charlie Hunter was playing in Mill Valley on the one evening I was free. I booked tickets and was treated to a wonderful light-hearted duo gig with Charlie on his weird bass-guitar hybrid and Scott Amendola on drums. I wasn’t close enough to the stage for repeated shooting, so I just soaked in the music and laughed at the stage banter and interaction between these two wonderful musicians. Still, I managed to capture this shot which exemplifies the trademark Charlie Hunter face contorsion in the middle of a solo. Processed in Lightroom with X-Equals’ XeL 2.0

Last night I went to see Zachary Richard live at the Divan du Monde. I took my x100s on the off chance I managed to stand close to the stage, which ended up being the case. I took a few shots. These are my first concert shots with the x100s. Obviously, being restricted to 35mm was extremely limiting, and only a few of the shots are framed properly. But the quality is absolutely there. The above photo is a crop to about 2/3 of the original RAW file, shot at 3200 ISO. It was edited in Lightroom with XeL 2.0, and the noise is nearly imperceptible. Amazing. I can’t wait for Fuji’s 50mm extension lens to be released: that will make me versatile with a high quality solution even at concerts where DSLRs are not allowed!

There’s something delightfully impish about Vintage Trouble‘s lead singer Ty Taylor. His energy on stage is second to none, and it brings back memories of early James Brown or Junior Wells shows. Fantastic music and fantastic band if you can catch them.

Jean-Jacques Milteau is one of my favourite musicians, a paragon of taste and tone. As always with harmonica players, it’s hard to frame a shot that works because you cannot see the instrument and the hands hide half of the face. Here however, I like how the dark-tinted glasses still let some of his decisive expression show through. I’m seeing him live with a new band next Friday, expect some very different shots from that gig!

Sometimes accidental shots can result in interesting things. This shot of Derek Trucks in motion wasn’t planned but I love how it came out. I’m now trying to reproduce that look deliberately, and it’s not easy!
