Cory Seznec is a wonderful guitarist whose band is full of wonderful talents. But there is something about double bass players that makes for great compositions, I find. I really like the intensity in Thomas Garoche’s expression here. Incidentally, this was my first gig shot with the 50-140 f/2.8 OIS lens, and my first gig ever shot with stabilization. It’s wonderful! I haven’t pushed it to extremes yet (I was still shooting at a speed faster than the focal length) but I will try pushing it in the future.
Contrebasse en Ombres

I find the double bass not only a beautiful instrument when I listen to it, but also when I take photos of it. Thomas Bramerie is the fantastic bass player in Eric Legnini’s Sing Twice! project and this was shot at the release party of their album in 2013. What a night!

I’ve started working on a book project showing my favourite B&W concert shots and talking about the musicians and why I love their music. I was sorting through the photos of an Avishai Cohen gig from 2010 when this shot came up. It was in color, but I tweaked a nice B&W and I think it works a treat. Edited in Lightroom with x-equals’ XeL 2.0.
Strings in Châtelet

In the Châtelet metro station in the center of Paris you will often find these string formations, who I suspect are music conservatoire students, playing the standards of classical music. I was strolling past last time when I stumbled upon them and decided to take a few shots. I’m still amazed at the quality of the x100s shots in low-light. I only noticed while processing that it was ISO 6400 and I couldn’t believe it…
Plucking the Strings

This is one of those shots that you may find underexposed, but that I deliberately shot this way. When shooting jazz, increasingly, I find that trying to get as much detail as possible is counter productive if the goal is to set mood. I detail that approach in an article published on the X-Equals blog entitled Embracing the Shadows. That article, incidentally, shows another shot of bassist Thomas Brameria from the same session.

Avishai Cohen is a very photo friednly musician. I used the Lensbaby here to focus on his face without losing the dynamic look of the instrument.
There are concert venues in Paris where you know they’ll never let you in with a DSLR, so I attended this Stanley Clarke / Stewart Copeland gig with my Panasonic LX-5. The shots were noisy and less detailed, but I managed to get this one, which I’m really proud of.
