When I was preparing this studio session, I shot all kinds of plant textures, walking around the parks in Hong Kong. I was looking for contrast, veins and patterns. The results of this shot looks how interesting long veiny leaves can be with the double exposure.

So the magic of the analog double exposure works as such : areas that are well lit will let the texture show up only faintly, whereas dark areas will let it show starkly. With dark haired subjects, like Clément here, that means the texture shows mostly in the hair, creating a very strange effect as if leaves were actually growing in the hair. Love it.

So the Scala gave very different results compared to using the Pan F. For one thing, the background wasn’t anywhere near as blown, resulting in a sea of grey rather than a contrasty black and white. This may have been due to the plant textures being shot on an overcast day, with low contrast. It may also be due to differences in dynamic range between Pan F and Scala. But it did give these shots a paint-like quality that I find quite intriguing, something of an Arcimboldo in black and white feel. What do you think ?

One of the interesting things with this double exposure film experiment is figuring out what you could have done better, but also the accidental successes. As a rule, I should have shot my textures either all portrait or all landscape and matched the portrait shots to that. But here the vertical texture projected horizontally on the shoulders of the model actually work really well. Food for thought for the next series.

Since my first session was experimental, a proof of concept if you will, I tried different films. Agfa Scala was probably not a very intelligent choice though. A combination of low dynamic range and excessive underexposure of the texture shots meant that the background was nowhere near blown enough. And yet… there’s something about these that really works, although I’m not sure I could tell you what.

For a long time I’ve been meaning to experiment with plant double exposures. Unlike other double exposure projects, I shoot the entire roll with plant textures, then an entire roll of portraits. This one was shot using Pan F which, looking back, was a little cavalier : some of the plant textures were blurry due to the low ISO of the film. Still, some of them came out really fantastic. I really like the way those long pointy leaves come out on Daniel’s skin.
