One thing you notice when you live in Hong Kong (and more generally in China, it was even more pronounced in Shanghai) is how much the Chinese love their dogs. There’s a special liking for small dogs (I suppose the topology of the city explains that in part) and so I’ve been trying to capture masters and dogs these last few weeks.

Lots of churches in Valencia. Lots of beggars also.

From the top of the San Catalina tower in Valencia, the view is magnificent, but the best thing is looking down into the narrow staircase. Looking back at this picture, I find it verging on the abstract, and it reminds me of the graphical world of Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas…
Hand in the Shadows
Fuji x100f, 35mm, f/2.8, 1/30s, ISO 1600
As one would expect, there were a lot of churches in Valencia, but my favourite was clearly Santa Catalina. Unlike the fancier cathedral, it felt like having macerated for a while, with bordeline creepy iconography. This statue (and the resulting shadow) struck me.

The weather wasn’t glorious during my short stay in Valencia, but you make the most of what you have. That’s why I went for a somewhat bleak processing of this old palace entrance near the Central Market. Goes with my series of Père Lachaise shots from a few months back.

This tiny but beautiful chapel in the middle of Seurasaari surprised me. The light was starting to fade (it was 1:11 PM, the EXIF tells me) so I had to be content with shooting it backlit, but I think it works.

In the Seurasaari forest are a collection of wooden buildings, a lot of them very pretty, with a sort of delicate rusticity. This one stood out as something you might find in a old fairy tale…

Towards the end of my walk in Seurasaari I stumbled upon this little lake upon which a log, covered in moss, had fallen. I felt that there was a interesting composition to be made, and so I tried. Not sure I succeeded (you tell me), but I kind of like it anyway…
Summer House (in Winter)
Fuji x100f, 35mm, f/11, 1/60s, ISO 250
It was in Finland last December that I truly experienced the beauty of the winter sun for the first time, this golden light during all the (short) hours of the day. There are a few summer houses on Seurasaari that I would really have liked to see the inside of…

In Akihabara there’s a sharp contrast between the main arteries, full of light, tall buildings, gaudy colours, and the back alleys. I spent a good while in those back alleys, trying to capture the slightly seedy feel of them. I think this shot did it.
