I have only had my 10-24mm lens (15-36mm FF) for a few months, and it’s so wide that sometimes I don’t quite know what to do with it. In Rome though I shot a lot of street with it and loved the versatility that such a wide angle offers in narrow, crowded streets. It also allows shooting « unsuspecting » targets like this policeman (who may or may not actually be a Carabinieri, but I like the name too much not to use it…)
Cycling from the Law

The Rome courthouse is a rather grand building, and I was getting ready to take a shot of it when these two cyclists came around and generously enhanced my composition.
Out the Door

I have this fascination for old doors, and so walking around Rome and enthused by the wonderful light, I was on the lookout for nice doors and door related scenes. I was standing in front of this door just as it opened and this lady came out. Magical moment.

Lettuce is a hard hitting modern funk band whose bass player, Jesus Coomes is nothing short of a stage imp. Not only does he play wicked bass grooves, but he jumps up and down like a madman and wears the silliest socks. Go check Lettuce if you can, it’s a guaranteed evening of fine music and booty shake.
Pattern and ‘Bone

I love shooting trombone players at the best of times. Because of the length of the instrument it has a potential for strong diagonals, and from the right angles there’s a lot of different potential shots to be had. But when I saw the pattern on Reut Regev’s dress (playing ‘bone with Hazmat Modine) I knew the potential had just gone up tenfold! This is one of my favourite shots of her that night.

Cory Seznec is a wonderful guitarist whose band is full of wonderful talents. But there is something about double bass players that makes for great compositions, I find. I really like the intensity in Thomas Garoche’s expression here. Incidentally, this was my first gig shot with the 50-140 f/2.8 OIS lens, and my first gig ever shot with stabilization. It’s wonderful! I haven’t pushed it to extremes yet (I was still shooting at a speed faster than the focal length) but I will try pushing it in the future.
Ounsa and Crowd

Ounsa Mébarkia is a fantastic and spectacular singer who occasionally plays with the wonder French brass band Ceux Qui Marchent Debout (CQMD). I saw them live at New Morning a couple of years ago, and revisiting those photos I found this one which I liked a lot. The pattern on the dress, the expression on her face and the crowd in the shadows below…
Good Night, Aesclepius

As you might have figured out by now, I really like this little temple in the Villa Borghese and decided to go shoot there both at sunrise and at sunset. The results are dramatically different as the sun going low behind the trees creates a wonderfully golden backlit scene.

The last time I’d been in Rome I had spotted those fountains in front of the Borghese Gallery but the light was all wrong and the photos I got weren’t very interesting. This time the light was right, and I had the tripod and ND filter. I quite like how this looks. In particular the rusted stone (is that a thing?) which I guess is fungi of some sort came out real nice. Oh and I know it’s not an imp, more likely some devil out of Dante, but Slow Imp sounded nicer.

For a long time I’ve been meaning to take a long exposure shot of the coliseum with traffic light trails in front. When I got there thanks to my friend Lori, I found that the angle I wanted to shoot from was occupied with scaffolding and a crane. So I went to the other side, and shot this. To be honest I’m not super happy with the angle, but I still think it works. Will revisit at a later date.
