If you like bokeh as I do, shooting slow film seems like a no brainer. On a bright, sunny day, I walked around the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris to find subjects that would work well at shallow apertures. This is probably my favourite shot from that roll, it’s gentle and melancholy.

I have an ambitious project currently, which is to illustrate my upcoming role-playing game set in an urban-fantasy Paris with photographs. I’ve started shooting some of the specific characters, including this one, the ghost of Marguerite de Bourgogne, a very unhappy queen who spent most of her life imprisoned either at the Tour de Nesles (a tower by the Seine that no longer exists) or in a cloister. In the game, she’s a ghost of sad lovers. This is one of a series of images destined to be mordançaged once I’ve practiced that technique a bit.

The pandemic is obviously harder on some than on others. As I was watching these street acrobats on the Sai Kung waterfront I thought it must be particularly tough on them. I hope they have other revenue streams. I can’t imagine how tough it must be to breathe through masks when doing the kinds of high energy tumbles they were doing…

While a recent discovery, the trails around Braemar Hill have been a fixture of our last six months. The combination of wilderness with the dense city down below is quite unique, and gives you a vantage point on the city that is rather prettier than the city is on the ground. I’m thinking I should go back there at night to do long exposures, but in the meantime, this is a pretty cool view !

There’s something about the stairwells that you find on trails all around Hong Kong that I just love. Even if for the most part they are concrete stairs that shouldn’t blend in with their surroundings, I find that the creeping grass and vines make them blend anyway.

One of the most striking features of all these buddha statues at the 10000 Buddhas Monastery was the red paint on their lips. I kinda like it!

Shooting with 100 ISO film is constraining. Especially on a sunny day with some shadows, since you always have to arbitrate on your depth of field as well as on what you want to come through exposure wise. This shot was super shallow, but I really like the end result even though my wife would probably say there’s too much blur!

One of the things I love with the GW690 is the amount of detail it renders. The cracks on the paint of this buddhist statue fascinated me, and I love how they were captured in the image.

Back to some 10000 Buddhas Monastery statue photos, in colour this time. In this one I wanted to capture the proximity between these magical places that from another angle would look so remote and the city (Sha Tin in this instance.)
