This is another example of a cyanotype where a lot of detail from the original image is lost… and yet I love the evocative nature of the print. It distances it from reality even more than the double exposure already does.

I’ve started to play around with Cyanotype recently, with the idea that I might want to give my images a grungier quality. I purchased some blank stamps which I’ve used to « coat » my paper. Not only do I get a checkered image, I get a lot of uneven coating as well as the cardboard drinks varying amounts of solution. I really like the results, and it’s definitely a field I will be exploring more.

It has been pointed out to me recently that many of my cyanotype prints are super contrasty and don’t retain much of the tonal range of the original film photo. There’s some definite truth to that, in part due to Bockingford being so contrasty and in part due to my negatives not being particularly doctored. And on some images it’s clearly a problem, but sometimes I just like the effect, and the fact that it looks so different from the original image.

I recently has the opportunity to shoot the wonderful Nadia, and her gorgeous skin tones sent me back to my previous session with a coloured model, Nelly. This image is very powerful, I find, and works really well as a cyanotype. This one is destined for Nelly to hang in her living room!

The core principle of film double exposure is that where one exposure is dark, the other exposure will appear in full, and when one is bright, the other exposure will not appear, or appear faintly. This makes shooting different skin tones both challenging and super exciting. With the wonderful Nadia I had the opportunity to try some old techniques out and see how different they came out. Suffice it to say they came out awesome!

It’s been really tricky to find the right way to light these shots taken from above, and while I have had some success, it’s not consistent yet. Still, when it works, it can be quite dramatic, and I’ve been giving symmetrical textures a try, which I think work nicely.

One of the things I love in the Hong Kong backalleys is a very particular jumble of odd items that I’ve only seen here. This was shot in Tai Hang and is very representative of those backalleys. You might think that this could be anywhere, but trust me, only in Hong Kong.

This was my first attempt at a large format street photo on cyanotype (this is an A2 size image). And it got me so excited that I’ve been revisiting my Hong Kong photos for some soon to be delivered prints. I loved the original image, I think I love the cyanotype print even more.
