As I was taking my daughter to the schoolbus early one morning, I happened to look up to this amazing mottled sky. As soon as she was in the bus, I ran back home, grabbed my camera and wide angle lens and came back to shoot this.
The Sea in Napier

Truth is, we got lousy weather in Napier. As a consequence, what I was hoping to shoot (the art deco buildings) I didn’t manage to get any good shot out of. But within minutes of arriving, this break in the clouds gave me a minimalist shot I really liked. I rarely post photos of my kids, but here is one!
Wellington Coast

I arrived in Wellington in late December (so early Summer) to abysmal weather (although the locals told me it wasn’t all that bad…) Still, the coast south of city was such a perfect spot for long exposure that I decided to brave the rain. This is the result, which I think made it worth it!
Daily Armageddon

In my (limited) landscape photography experience, I’ve always found that mountain sunrises or sunsets were the hardest to get right, because the contrast between the fiery sky (when you’re lucky) and the unlit mountain is so harsh. Sometimes though, it works as I think is the case here.
Buddha in the Clouds

This is another shot of the Buddha Dordenma in Thimpu, Bhutan. A truly impressive piece of architecture. One of the most surprising aspects to me was the notion that this would be built today. I can’t imagine a cathedral being built in France today in the style of the medieval cathedrals, yet this is, in essence, what it is. It’s one of those moments when I realize that spirituality truly means something else in Asia.
Transamerican Peaking

Overlooking Rangitoto

The view from the rotating top of the Auckland Skytower is stunning, especially on a bright day like the September day I went up there. It is however surprisingly difficult to take a good shot of that view in between the unusually high vantage point and the color cast from the windows. Still, I managed to produce this one. It’s not a work of art by any means, but it shows downtown Auckland, the harbour in action and Rangitoto. Better than nothing…
One of those lucky shots when the light hits your subject perfectly despite a looming storm…
This is a black and white variant of Pink Sunrise. Interesting how the feeling it conveys is radically different, isn’t it?
I am sometimes astounded at what a pesly little smartphone can produce provided you have enough light. This is an iphone shot, from the side of an Airplane (which won’t surprise you). It’s quite abstract, but intriguing all the same.
