One of the hardest things when shooting concerts is to catch the interaction between musicians. These are fleeting moments, and it’s often hard to have the right framing and the right focus at the right time. All the more exciting when it works!

You’re going to start thinking I’m obsessed with sousaphones, considering how many shots of sousaphone players I post relative to the rarity of the instrument (see Kirk’s Work, Rebel Edward and Joe’s Rainbow). You wouldn’t be all wrong, although obviously it’s helped by the fact that a lot of the music I love features sousaphones and that it’s a very graphical instrument. Anyway, this was my first time live seeing the guys of Ceux Qui Marchent Debout, aka CQMD and their sousaphone player Roufi. It was actually a gig by the Madd Vibes Brass Band which is a combination of CQMD and Fishbone frontman Angelo Moore. Anyway, I tried to do something a little different here and outline only Roufi’s silhouette and that of his instrument. Quite pleased with the results, I must say.

I’ve seen the Dirty Dozen Brass Band five times now, but only twice with original sousaphone player Kirk Joseph, and last week was one of those two. Kirk Joseph is an imposing gentleman, and a very modern player (he has a rack of pedals in front of him when he plays that would make many a guitar player drool). I was quite pleased with this shot of him in the middle of a solo.

It’s been way too long since I posted a concert shot, but the fact is it’s been way to long since I attended a concert… This was from the Soul Rebel Brass Band’s infectious gig in Paris La Défense last July.
Joe Daley is not just a wonderful musician, he’s also a classy gentleman and a superb subject for concert photography. This is probably my favourite concert shot to date. It won second place at the Nancy Jazz Pulsation 2011 Photo Contest, and was selected by the 500px staff in their Editor’s Choice.
