This tiny but beautiful chapel in the middle of Seurasaari surprised me. The light was starting to fade (it was 1:11 PM, the EXIF tells me) so I had to be content with shooting it backlit, but I think it works.

In the Seurasaari forest are a collection of wooden buildings, a lot of them very pretty, with a sort of delicate rusticity. This one stood out as something you might find in a old fairy tale…

Towards the end of my walk in Seurasaari I stumbled upon this little lake upon which a log, covered in moss, had fallen. I felt that there was a interesting composition to be made, and so I tried. Not sure I succeeded (you tell me), but I kind of like it anyway…
Summer House (in Winter)
Fuji x100f, 35mm, f/11, 1/60s, ISO 250
It was in Finland last December that I truly experienced the beauty of the winter sun for the first time, this golden light during all the (short) hours of the day. There are a few summer houses on Seurasaari that I would really have liked to see the inside of…
Back to Reality

There I was, wandering around Seurasaari feeling like city and civilization were far away and then… I came back to reality.

With the sun so low on the horizon during the (short) daytime, Finland forests let you experiment with backlighting. I quite like how this one came through.
Fuji x100f, 35mm, f/2.8, 1/1250s, ISO 200
I think my time in Finland was the first time I was truly exposed to a winter sun this low (and in the sky for so short a period). I made many attempts at shooting directly into the sun, using trees and branches as partial covers. This one (I think) works quite well at evoking what it felt like (ie. damn cold!)
House in the Frost
Fuji x100f, 35mm, f/8, 1/100s, ISO 200
I really wanted to do this shot in long exposure of at least a few seconds, which would have frozen the water, but despite the embedded ND8 in the x100f and a polarizing filter, I would only bring it down to 1/5th of a second. So I shot this straight instead. Still pleased with the results although I really have to find a good source for ND1000 filters.

I was worried that Helsinki wouldn’t give me a real taste of Finland, but fortunately, minutes from my hotel was a wooded island called Seurasaari: forest, seashore, winter sun and no cars, it felt like the rest of Finland (to me).
(This is the second part of my Coromandel Travelogue. You can find Part 1 here.) Having taken a few shots of Hahei Beach, including this panorama, Hahei Beach Panorama iPhone 5 I booked a room at The Church, and had a quick but tasty chowder at the Hahei Beach Café; then it was time for [...]
